(This post is themed by a post written two years from today, titled “Jesus the ultimate refuge, Jesus the solid asylum”, at https://wellsofwater.org/2015/01/31/jesus-the-ultimate-refuge-jesus-the-solid-asylum/)
This morning, I pulled up my phone and noticed a Notification from the NY Times app about an article titled “Refugees Detained at U.S. Airports, Prompting Legal Challenges to Trump’s Immigration Order”. I believe it’s just the tip of the iceberg for all refugees.
As I read through the article, I remembered one thing that is definite and absolute and guaranteed: there is only one place any refugee or anyone else can be found and not be deported from and that is “in Christ”. When God puts you in Christ, there is no detention or deportation, no change of mind on His part.
“Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1)
You may be subjected to being kicked out of a country, or a group, or a school, or a job, or a position, or a career, or a family, or someone’s life, or someone’s heart, or the world, true and assured rest can only be found in Jesus for all times.
Laws will change. Policies will change. But God will never change.
“for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable” (Romans 11:29).
Freedom, peace, joy, contentment can only be found in Christ. No matter who you are, you can run around the world seeking refuge, seeking asylum, seeking hope, seeking freedom, seeking a better life…all can only be found in Jesus because Jesus is the life, the peace, the joy from above to enjoy in this age and the age to come for all eternity.
In the new covenant signed with the blood of Jesus, God promises:
“For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.” (Hebrews 8:12)
This is part of the gift that God has for all the world, including Haitians, Bahamians, Canadians, Americans, Dominicans, Brazilians, Syrians, Iraqis, all of the nations, in Christ Jesus.
To anyone seeking a refuge from whatever problem you’re enduring, this is my reminder to you:
“whether…the world or life or death or things present or things to come; all things belong to you, and you belong to Christ; and Christ belongs to God.” (1 Corinthians 3:22-23)
You will never be separated from the love of God.
May the Lord open your eyes by His Spirit to remind you and comfort you of such truth, to his glory through Christ Jesus. Amen.
