When the disciples asked Jesus how to pray, they simply mean, “How do we talk with God?”
Jesus answered,
“Talk the way you talk with your father.
Talk the way you talk with someone whose name everyone respects.
Talk the way you talk with someone who is your dad and who happens to be king as well.
Talk the way you talk to someone who lets nothing happen without Him wanting it to happen. Both things that we can see, and things that we can’t see. Both things that we can understand, and things that we don’t yet understand.
Talk the way you talk with someone who always makes sure everyone gets what they need.
Talk the way you talk with someone who holds no grudge against any wrong you could ever do. The way you talk with someone who wants nothing to stand between the two of you. Just as you would want others to talk with you.
Talk the way you talk to someone who always gives you the right counsel to set you on the right path so that you get to live with joy, peace and love.”
That’s how you talk with God. Jesus made it so simple, because God is simple.
“the simplicity that is in Christ” (2 Corinthians 11:3)
You could say something like
“‘Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” (Matthew 6:9-13)
As you talk with Jesus, so you talk with God. As simple as that.
