“Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.” This is a saying from Solomon, at the very beginning of Ecclesiastes.
In the past, I would always resort to this saying whenever I felt despair over failures or disappointments. But what Jesus had taught me through the Holy Spirit is that this is not the objective of the saying at all. Instead, the saying is supposed to put me at rest, like the entire passage. The saying is from Ecclesiastes 1:2.
Here’s how I see the verse through the mind of God. Regardless of my choice or your choice, my way or your way, my values or your values, life on this earth altogether is vanity.
In other words, we have nothing else to experience through our efforts, mine or yours, but vanity.
That truly sets my mind at ease, because being anxious over my ways compared to your ways will not make any difference.
“Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?” (Matthew 6:27)
Peace is not found in whatever we could ever do, but in what God has done through Christ. Knowing that I’m all set with God because of Christ, that truly makes me happy.
