“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
What is it that may cause anyone to perish? It is fear. Fear can cause anyone to stop breathing, to choke, to have their bloodflow go either much slower than usual or in the total opposite direction. Fear is like the invisible glass in your mind that keeps pressing all your thoughts down to impossibility. But Christ came and punched a blow through that glass and shatter it for good.
“What is impossible with man is possible with God.” (Luke 18:27)
Before God made me believe the true gospel of Jesus so that I may truly believe in Him and His Son, I was perishing. How could that be? I was going after every perishable thing. My hope and dreams were all based on perishing foundations like money, status, formal education.
I had stopped perishing once I believed in God and Christ and the Holy Spirit alone. There’s nothing perishable about God. Even Jesus’ body didn’t perish. It didn’t see corruption.
It is true that whoever believes in Jesus has the will to not perish because Jesus does not perish. Instead, Jesus brings us to full knowledge of who He is and thus who God is.
“Now this is eternal life: that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.” (John 17:3)
Fear leads to death. But faith in Jesus brings me new life. Faith in Jesus overcame all of my fear.
I’m able to live without fear by grace through faith in Jesus. Do I have concerns or questions? Of course, I do. And thus I’m learning from the Holy Spirit everything he has to teach me. My questions or concerns show my curiosity into the depth and breadth of the power and wisdom of God. Christ is the power and wisdom of God.
“Christ, the power of God and the wisdom of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:24)
In Christ and God, alone, my hope is found.
