Sometimes, I get annoyed by my own kids. Sometimes, I get so serious that their laughter becomes a nuisance. But in reality, God uses them to remind me what I should be doing instead of being so serious or worried about whatever it is that I’m so focused on at the time.
Did you know that God wants us to be joyful? In Galatians 5:22, Paul reminded us that the fruit of the Spirit is…joy. As a believer of Christ, as a child of God, God is mostly pleased when we are joyful, holding that everything is in his care. Because, as far as God is concerned, there is no good reason for us to worry. I find myself in full embrace with God when I am joyful, singing or dancing like a child without one hint of a worry in my mind. Joy allows us to breathe.
Because of the finished work of Christ, we are to rejoice, dance, even if people are looking at us. We are to freely express our joy like a child who doesn’t care about what “other” people might say. When was the last time you danced? When was the last time you had a belly-aching, breath-taking, tear-jerking non-stop laugh going on? When was the last time you rejoiced in knowing that God wants you to rejoice like a parent wants his child to be joyful?
With the help of God, we can rejoice. With the help of Christ, we will rejoice. That’s why he puts his Spirit in us, so that the Spirit can get our mind and heart tuned to Jesus and uncontrollably rejoice. We will not only sing and dance in the shower, we’ll do it at the bus stop, in the store aisle, at the gas station, wherever we may be, because God loves us. Since God loves us, we have to rejoice.
Now, don’t be so occupied with worrying to the point you have forgotten why and how to rejoice. With every moment we go on worrying, we’re literally taking in less oxygen to the body. And that can attract illness to the body, because oxygen is fuel to the body, just as the good news of forgiveness of our sins is oxygen to our faith in Christ.
So, rejoice!!! Sing some songs that remind you of God’s goodness and dance along, like a child who believes that her Father can do anything and everything for her. Go ahead, rejoice in Jesus, rejoice by his Spirit inside of you, rejoice and breathe like God wants you to breathe. Go silly, because everything is under Jesus’ control.
“Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice!” (Philippians 4:4)
Here’s a favorite song of mine, by John Legend, because all of God loves all of me, all of Christ loves all of me:
“‘Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you, oh oh”
Rejoice in the Lord, Rejoice in Jesus.
